FIRST THINGS FIRST!
Before we get started, I want to find out what you know already about the Amazon. Maybe you know nothing at all, maybe you know a lot - maybe you think you don't know anything but you will discover that you actually do. It doesn't matter either way - it is just to get you thinking.
Step 1: So to get started, you are going to put your knowledge of tables into use and create what is called a 'KWL chart'. I want you to copy down the table below into your portfolios.
'K' stands for 'What I KNOW'
'W' stands for 'What I WANT to know'
'L stands for 'What I have LEARNED'
Step 2: Start filling in the first column, ' What I Know' - listing anything that you know about the Amazon rainforest - the animals, plants or people that live there - and anything else you can think of. Then we are going to have a discussion as a class and find out what we know. We will write it up on a sheet of paper to stick on the wall and look back at it at the end of our study.
Step 3: Now that we have had a discussion about 'What We Know', you can start filling in the second column, 'What I Want to Know'. You can come back to this column at any time you like to write down things you would like to find out. It is for you to complete right up until we finish our journey of the Amazon.
Step 4: The final column, 'What I Have Learned' is for you to fill in as you discover the answers to your questions in 'What I Want to Know' - and anything else important that you have learned. We will also spend time at the end of the unit completing this column.
